Quick answer

Know your own requirements first. RM150 is often a template or a thin landing page, not premium, not custom. RM5k is usually a professional site: unique layout plus systems people actually run a business on. Hire when you need that second thing. Buy a cheap ready site only when the first thing is honestly enough.

“Website berapa ya?”

I cannot answer that from the word website alone.

It could be a simple landing page.

It could also be: booking system + payment + admin panel + email + database + 17 things nobody mentioned in the first WhatsApp.

So before I give a price, I look at the actual scope.

The lesson is not “cheap is bad.” The lesson is: write down what you actually need, then pick the quote that matches that list.

Why RM150 and RM5k keep showing up in the same chat

Someone sees a TikTok: “Website siap RM150.” Someone else got a quote for RM5,000. Both used the same word. Both are angry at each other.

They are not buying the same product. One is often a page. The other is often a system.

If you skip that distinction, you will hire the wrong person, or you will buy a template and then ask why it cannot take bookings, send receipts, and let staff change prices at 11pm.

What RM150 usually is

Sometimes that number is honest. A simple landing page does not need a month of custom design.

Typical RM150-ish work:

  • One long page: hero, a few services, maybe a gallery, WhatsApp button.
  • A template everyone else already used, Canva, Carrd, Wix, a marketplace theme, an AI dump.
  • Not premium. Not unique. Fine if you only need “here is my shop, tap here.”
  • You still pay separately for domain, hosting, and whoever fixes it later.

That can be enough for a pop-up, a one-off event, a student project, or a brand that only lives on Instagram and needs a link in bio that does not look like a Google Doc.

It is not enough if customers must book a slot, pay a deposit, or if three staff need to log in and see tomorrow’s schedule.

What an RM5k website usually is

RM5,000 in Malaysia is not “a fancy homepage.” It is closer to a small professional product.

Typical RM5k-ish work:

  • Custom layout, not the same salon template as the shop next door.
  • Real mobile pass: forms, sticky WhatsApp, type that works on a cheap Android.
  • Booking or enquiry flow that does not dump people into a broken Google Form.
  • Payment, deposits, or at least a path that does not leak halfway.
  • Custom admin so staff can change dates, prices, photos, without calling the developer for every typo.
  • Email or WhatsApp notifications. A database of customers, bookings, or leads.
  • Handover: hosting, domain, how to update, what is in scope next year.

You are hiring someone to design, build, and own the result. That is a different job from pasting your logo onto a theme.

RM150 vs RM5k, side by side

Same word. Different shopping list.

You asked for Around RM150 Around RM5k
What it usually is Template or one landing page Custom professional site, often with systems
Look Theme lots of people already use Layout designed for your brand and customer
Pages One scroll, maybe a contact bit Unique pages that match how you sell
Booking / payment Usually not. “Message us” only Can include booking, deposit, receipts
Admin panel You fight the template dashboard Staff can run the day without you
Email / database Maybe a form that emails you. Maybe not Leads, bookings, notifications you can trust
When it is enough Promo, event, simple brochure Real operations: clinic, field, class, rental
Hire or buy? Buy / template can be rational Hire someone who can own the build

Know the requirement before you ask the price

This is the actual lesson.

Sit with yourself for ten minutes. Not with the cheapest vendor. With a list.

  1. What must the visitor do on the phone? Call, WhatsApp, book, pay, download a menu?
  2. How many unique pages? One scroll, or Home / Services / Pricing / FAQ / Contact?
  3. Do you need booking, payment, or both?
  4. Does staff need an admin panel, or will you WhatsApp me every time the price changes?
  5. Do you need email or WhatsApp alerts when someone submits?
  6. Is there a database: customers, slots, inventory?
  7. Who owns the domain and hosting after launch?
  8. What is not included? Photos, copy, logo, ads, SEO month-to-month.

If the list is “one page, WhatsApp, looks decent,” RM150-class work can be the right size. If the list is “booking + payment + admin + email + database,” you are not shopping for a landing page. You are shopping for a small product. That is why the quote jumps.

People get hurt when they send the second list and expect the first price.

Should you hire, or buy a ready website?

Buy (template, builder, RM150 pack) when the site is a poster with a URL. You accept it will look like a template. You accept limited control. You will not ask for a custom booking engine “included.”

Hire when the site has to survive real customers. Someone has to design the flow, write code that can be changed, test on a phone, and answer when the form dies on payday weekend.

Hiring is not automatically RM5k. A tight brochure with custom design can sit between those two worlds. The point is matching spend to scope, not picking a number because a stranger on Reels used the word website. Wider bands are in the 2026 website cost guide.

When the cheap option is actually smart

  • You are testing a name, not running operations on the URL.
  • Instagram does the selling. The site is a backup card.
  • You have no photos, no copy, and no time. A clean template beats a half-finished custom dream.
  • You understand you are buying a page, not a booking company in a box.

Cheap and clear is fine. Cheap and fantasy is how you pay twice.

When you should stop hunting RM150

  • Staff need to see bookings without opening 40 WhatsApp chats.
  • Customers pay online. Money and personal data are involved.
  • You are tired of “can you just add…” every week with no admin.
  • The template already looks like three competitors on the same street.
  • You want someone who can explain the stack, not only send a preview link.

If that is you, read how to choose a web designer and vibe coder vs real developer before you pay a deposit.

What I ask before I quote

I will not invent a number from “nak website.” I ask what the first WhatsApp left out: pages, booking, payment, admin, email, database, who writes the copy, who sends photos, who hosts it.

Then you get a scope. Then a price. That order exists so you do not feel scammed when the RM150 page cannot do the RM5k job.

If you only needed the landing page, I will say so. You do not have to buy a system you will not use. That is also the lesson.
